Change In Perspective

I recently communicated with someone who had been really hurt by actions of a group of people. She had expected one set of actions from the group but did not get them. Although the event occurred some time ago, she continues to be very offended and is choosing to withdraw from the group. Now the interesting part is that not everybody in the group disappointed her—some did exactly as she expected. As a matter of fact, she did not even expect those actions from those who did as she expected. Her disappointment lies in not getting what she expected from specific members of the group—namely, the group’s leadership.
Using this example, I want to encourage a change in perspective for each of us. It is so easy to focus on what we don’t have or receive and miss out on the awareness of all the great things that we do have. Without a change in our perspective, we can become frustrated, constantly disappointed and stressed. We may even live feeling defeated, dejected, damaged and devastated.
So let’s start with this season. Instead of focusing on the gifts we do not get or the people who do not give us gifts, choose to find satisfaction in what is received and really appreciate those who do give to us. It really is an honor when anyone thinks enough of us to give us a gift. As matter of fact, focus on the one gift that we already have...the true reason for the season. Now that’s a change in perspective!
